How to pack your apartment for a move without breaking anything
Practical tips for packing the kitchen, dishes, books and clothes before a move.
Most moving damage comes from poor packing, not from the drive. A few simple rules keep everything in one piece.
Small boxes for heavy things
Books, plates and bottles go in small boxes. A big box full of books is too heavy to lift and can tear.
Dishes and plates
- Wrap each plate in paper and stand plates on edge, not flat
- Fill gaps with paper or towels so nothing shifts
- Mark the box 'fragile' and which side is up
Clothes
Hanging clothes can travel in large bags straight off the hanger. Folded clothes can stay in the drawers of a small dresser if it isn't too heavy.
Electronics
If you kept the original boxes, now's the time to use them. If not, wrap in a blanket and fill the gaps. Photograph the cables before unplugging.
Smart labeling
Write the room in the new home and the contents on every box. Mark one box 'open first': sheets, towels, kettle, cups and chargers.
