Disassembly and assembly when moving: sliding-door closets, hinged closets and electric beds
What happens to your sliding-door closet, hinged-door closet and electric bed on moving day, and how to prepare for disassembly and assembly.
Closets and large beds are the heaviest, most delicate part of any move. Most don't fit through the door, the stairwell or the elevator in one piece, so they are taken apart at the old home and reassembled at the new one.
Sliding-door closet disassembly and assembly
Sliding doors are heavy and often have mirrors or glass. We lift the doors off the tracks, wrap each one separately and take the body apart. On assembly we re-align the doors so they glide smoothly and don't stick.
Hinged-door closet disassembly and assembly
With a hinged-door closet we remove the doors and hinges first, then shelves and drawers, and finally the body. The hardware goes into a labeled bag for each closet, and on assembly we adjust the hinges so the doors close straight.
Electric bed disassembly and assembly
An electric or adjustable bed has a motor, a remote and cables. Before the move the bed is lowered flat, unplugged, the cables are secured and the base is taken apart. At the new home we assemble it, connect it and check that it raises and lowers.
